Entrepreneur

Since I first started becoming a meat cutter I was intent on learning every facet of my job, and even a little more. In this shop we don't have many shop knives, that's because everyone is expected to purchase an maintain their own knives. So, I decided I was going to learn how to sharpen my own knives instead of paying someone else to do it. I got pretty good at it and soon people were paying me to sharpen their knives instead of having the usual person do it on a grinder, which only does an ok job, and eats away at the blade a lot faster than sharpening them by hand on a wet stone. The person who contracts with the store to sharpen our knives also sells us our knives, so there is definitely the possibility that they are trying to make more money by wearing out the knives quickly. I don't stand to make a profit there, in fact I don't make much profit otherwise, the stones cost $12 each and I go through those pretty quickly, but I do it for the pride more than anything I think. Yeah, I sharpen knives better than a contracted professional, and that is something to be proud of in my book.

I feel like now that I am where I am in my "career" there isn't much I don't know about the job. All that means to me is that it is starting to get really repetitive and a little boring sometimes. I am considering going back to school, and I should start looking into classes for the winter quarter and decide what I want to do. Anyway, I need to go sharpen a couple people's knives before work.

Hey that's awesome. I hope you do go back to school. Always important to better yourself in life. Even if you are always a meatcutter, knowledge is power.
